According to recent Traffic Police statistics, the top two causes of accidents were attributed to motorists failing to keep a proper lookout and failing to have proper control of vehicle. We offer some tips to drivers for a safer journey:
Be Aware Of Your Vehicle
A driver needs to be familiar with the controls and handling characteristics of his vehicle. He should also, before taking off, ensure that the tyres, indicator lights, brakes and other basic functions of his vehicle are in good working condition.
Be Aware of Yourself
Accidents often occur when the driver is not able to concentrate on his driving. Be aware of signs like fatigue, stress, alcohol and medication consumption. Avoid using your handphone while driving, even if you are using a hands-free kit. It can be distracting if you are engaged in a conversation. Refrain from fiddling around with your radio/CD player or any in-vehicle entertainment system while you are on the road too. A driver needs to be alert to observe, judge and react to the different traffic and road accidents. Otherwise, you put yourself and other road users at risk.
Be Aware Of Other Road Users
Communicate clearly your intentions to turn, change lanes or stop. Give other road users time to observe and react to your actions. Always maintain a safe following distance as it takes time to bring your moving vehicle to a complete stop. Also, pay careful attention to pedestrians and other road users, for example, cyclists who are more vulnerable than yourself.
Be Aware Of Changing Conditions
Do not be complacent. Even familiar roads can be dangerous. Many are not aware that although the roads are the same, the traffic and road conditions are constantly changing. Similarly, there could be road works or tree pruning taking place. Stay alert and always keep a lookout.
